Kisan Mela (Utsav)

Kisan Mela or Kisaan Mela (किसान मेला), which can be translated as ‘किसान का मेला या किसानों का मेला (farmer’s fair) in Hindi’, is a form/type of exhibition in the field of agriculture.

It is also known as Kisan Utsav (किसान उत्सव) and it is a method of mass communication, which also is a part of extension education.

(5). Private organizations.

(6). Department of agriculture and its allied sectors are the major participants.

Who organizes… Kisan Mela?

Generally, the programme is organized by the state agricultural universities. It is an integral part of the annual schedule of many agricultural universities.

Occasionally, it may also be organized by one of the followings:

  1. Local administrations in collaboration with the related departments, e.g., department of agriculture and department of horticulture.
  2. On the order/recommendation of State Government or Central Government.

Upgrading Farmers

Basically, it is a part of extension education programme from which a farmer can gain required knowledge, and it is necessary for the overall development of that farmer.

Exhibition of New Technologies

Many new agricultural technologies are invented in each year. Kisan mela(s) are  a very good platform for the introduction of these new technologies. Through this programme, farmers are introduced with new inventions.

Introduction to Different Farming Models

Farming models are as follows:

  1. Poultry farming.
  2. Dairy farming.
  3. Fish farming.
  4. Goat farming.
  5. Field-crops farming system.
  6. Vegetable farming.
  7. Fruit farming.
  8. Mixed farming.

Example 01

Demonstration of cage system or deep litter system in poultry farming shows that how or in which manner a poultry farm can be or should be managed.

Example 02

Guide to good dairy farming practice is very important. Progressive farmers can go with some advance technologies used in dairy farming. But, before adoption they need demo.

Demonstration of such important technologies, e.g.- rotary milking parlor (a modern dairy facility) can actually support modern day’s intensive dairy units.

Fish farming in ponds, canals, lake etc., are the traditional method of fish farming.

Introduction to Advanced Technologies

  1. Irrigation models.

Example 01

Demonstration of application and importance of drip irrigation system. Drip irrigation for greenhouse cultivation and drip irrigation for open field cultivation.

Conclusion

Kisan Mela is a farmer-friendly programme. A farmer must visit this annual programme. It is necessary for the self development of a farmer by  adopting scientific knowledge and different advanced tools.
