(1). Farm Yard Manure

What is farm yard manure?

FYM or farm yard manure is an organic manure. It is an excellent source of the major nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potash. Components of farm yard manure are as follows:

  • Cow dung, or goat/sheep dung.
  • Cattle fodder.
  • Agricultural plant residues.

How would you use it?

You can add litter materials from a poultry farm in farm yard manure, inside a biogas plant, and in a vermicompost unit. We can also use it as an organic mulch.

(2). Biogas plant

What is biogas?

Biogas is bioenergy. The main constituent of biogas is methane. It is prepared inside a specific structure which is known as biogas plant. It is an anaerobic chemical process.

Following materials are necessary for the preparation of biogas:

  • Cow dung.
  • Agricultural plant residues.

How would you use it in a biogas plant?

Collect all the organic materials from your poultry farm. Ad it to agricultural plant residues and cow dung.

(3). Organic mulch

What is mulch?

Mulch is any type of artificial layer which supports commercial and non-commercial crop cultivation by avoiding crop and weed competition for water, fertilizers, and land space use.

Functions of mulches are as follows:

  • Soil moisture conservation.
  • Weed control.
  • Insect-pests control.

Types of mulch are as follows:

  • Artificial mulch.
  • Organic mulch.

What is organic mulch?

When we use organic materials as a mulch, then we can say it organic mulch. For example, use of paddy straw as a mulch.

How would you use it as an organic mulch?

As a mulch, poultry farm litter will benefit plants by following ways:

  • By providing major nutrients to plants.
  • By suppressing weed growth.
  • By increasing microbial activities.
  • By protecting soil moisture.

(4). Production of vermicompost

What is vermicompost?

Vermiompost is an organic manure. It is the final result of the biological process or activity of an earth worm species (Eisenia fetida). It is (vermiompost) similar to farm yard manure. In modern day’s farming, vermicompost is one of the major OM.

Necessary structure and materials for the preparation of vermicompost are as follows:

  • Cow dung.
  • Agricultural organic residues.
  • Earth worm.
  • Vermi tank.

How would you use it for the preparation of vermicompost?

  • Ad the litter with other organic materials.

(5). Explanations

5.1: Agricultural residues

Any agricultural wastes, such as leaves, twigs, stem, grass, weed, left cattle fodder, organic mulch, secondary products, such as jute bags, papers, cardboard, etc. are agricultural residues.

5.2: Vermi tank

It is a solid square tank. Size of a vermi tank depends on the production need of a farm owner. Cement and bricks are the major components of a vermi tank.
