(1). What is cropping system?

Cropping system is an agronomic model which includes various components such as geometry of planting, management practices etc.

Cropping system is equal to cropping pattern and management.

(2). What is cropping pattern?

Crop pattern is a system of cropping which tells about the crop rotation practice of a particular area. This may be a village, district, state or country.

Major components of a cropping pattern are as follows:

  • Crop.
  • Time.
  • Space.

(3). Types of cropping systems

There are two types of cropping system:

Mono cropping.
Multiple cropping.

(1). Mono cropping

A particular area is dominate by one species of crop. C. I. of a mono cropping is always 100%.

(2). Multiple cropping

Growing of two or more crops on the same piece of land in a year. Here,

You can see intensification of cropping in time and space dimensions.

(4). What are the types of multiple cropping, explain each?

Answer: The types of multiple cropping are as follows –

Mixed cropping.
Sequence cropping.
Relay cropping.
Inter cropping.

2.1 Mixed cropping

  • Growing two or more crops simultaneously in on same field.
  • Ratio is not fixed.
  • Sowing method is broadcasting.
  • It is ideal for dryland areas.
  • This is an example of subsistence farming.
  • First study is done by La Flitze in 1928.

2.2 Sequence cropping

  • Growing of two or more crops in a quick succession on the piece of land in a farming year.
  • Harvesting of first crop is and sowing of second crop is observed at the same time.
  • Example is – Maize and potato.

2.3 Relay cropping

  • Growing of two or more than two crops on the same piece of land in a farming year.
  • Second crop succeeding crop is sown before the harvesting of preceding crop.
  • Examples are – Paddy and lathyrus, potato and radish.

2.4 Inter cropping

  • Growing two or more crops simultaneously in on same field.
  • Ratio is fixed.

Example:

What and mustard = 9:1 ratio.

Examples of inter cropping are as follows:

  • Parallel cropping.
  • Companion cropping.
  • Multilevel cropping.
  • Synergetic cropping.
